Former US Congressman Kurt Schrader Endorses Rene Gonzalez

Former United States Congressman for Oregon Kurt Schrader today announced his endorsement of Commissioner Rene Gonzalez for Portland Mayor.

“Rene has the values, vision and heart to help Oregon’s largest city reach its fullest potential,” Schrader said. “At this critical moment, we need Democrats like Rene at the helm more than ever. He’ll protect and leverage what makes Portland special as he leads the city through its next chapter.”

The seven-term Democrat represented Oregon’s 5th congressional district from 2009 to 2023.

“I’m so thankful to Congressman Schrader for his endorsement and for recognizing Portland needs a change in direction,” Gonzalez said. “He understands how important Portland’s image is on the national stage. Improving the city’s reputation by cleaning up the streets and establishing accountability is one of my top priorities.”

Schrader’s endorsement follows several others this month, including The Columbia Pacific Building and Construction Trades Council, The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (Local 48), The International Union of Operating Engineers (Local 701) and The Multnomah County Deputy Sheriffs Association.

Rene Gonzalez is a Portland City Commissioner, parent, and lifelong Democrat who knows that our city needs a change of leadership and direction, because the suffering and danger on our streets is unacceptable. Rene has been a standard bearer for public safety in Portland and he will tackle our toughest problems, including encampments in our streets and parks, untreated drug addiction, and our skyrocketing housing and living costs. Rene is running for Mayor to make Portland a safe, beautiful, healthy, and livable city where families and seniors can thrive.
