Oregon Teamsters Endorse Rene Gonzalez for Mayor

The Rene Gonzalez Campaign for Portland Mayor today announced the endorsement of Teamsters Joint Council No. 37.

“As mayor, we know Rene will prioritize the region’s hardworking men and women,” said Teamsters Legislative Director Steve Konopa. “He understands they are the backbone of our city and Portland’s success is reliant on ensuring access to family wage jobs and making the city a safe place to go to work.”

Teamsters Joint Council No. 37 represents more than 20,000 workers across Oregon, Southwest Washington and Idaho. It is comprised of nine Locals representing various industries, including warehouse, freight, bakery, laundry, food processing, dairy, airline, waste and sanitation, construction, grocery, public services and more.

“Earning the support of the Teamsters is very meaningful to me,” Gonzalez said. “We should all rally around the priorities of Portland workers: safe access to their places of work, well-paying and supportive family-wage jobs, and a secure and affordable housing supply. Our work to change Portland’s direction needs to start at this basic, human level.”

The Teamsters endorsement of Gonzalez follows several other from local trade and labor organizations, including:

• The Columbia Pacific Building and Construction Trades Council
• The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (Local 48)
• The International Union of Operating Engineers (Local 701)
• The Portland Firefighters Association Local 43
• The Portland Police Association
• The Multnomah County Deputy Sheriffs Association
