Portland Firefighter and Police Unions Endorse Rene Gonzalez for Mayor

The Gonzalez campaign announced Tuesday the endorsement of the city’s two largest public safety unions: Portland Fire Fighters’ Association Local 43 and the Portland Police Association.

The Firefighters and Police Unions offered the following statements:

“As firefighters our top priority is to keep our community safe. We all want to be safe in our homes and in our community. Portland needs a Mayor who will make public safety a priority. That’s why Portland Firefighters endorse Rene Gonzalez for Mayor. Rene is a proven leader who will continue to make sure firefighters have what we need to keep Portland safe.” – Isaac McLennan, President, Portland Fire Fighters’ Association, IAFF Local 43

“As a city, we deeply value a woven public safety model connected to community and accessible to all. We have seen positive momentum towards pragmatic solutions that are moving our city forward. It is critical that we continue to foster new ideas and courageous leadership. The PPA endorses Rene Gonzalez for Mayor because he has demonstrated these qualities and is best suited to lead us forward.” – Aaron Schmautz, President, Portland Police Association

Commissioner Gonzalez offered the following: “Partnering with our public safety professionals is essential to restoring Portland’s status as one of America’s safest cities. I am thrilled to have the support of our city’s first responders.”

The Gonzalez campaign is entering the summer with a huge fundraising lead, having raised over $160,000 so far, nearly double the closest opponent. With more than 1,100 individual contributors, these public safety endorsements will only serve to bolster the campaign’s momentum.
